Graduate Seminar, Art History - FALL 2022

The Body

The body abounds in the global history of art in literal and metaphoric forms.  Art historians, critics, and artists make, and speak of, bodies of work and iconographic corpses composed of discrete objects that represent bodies and/or are analyzed with references to anatomical analogies.

In this graduate seminar, students will interrogate the conceptual category of the body, drawing upon a wide, cross-disciplinary range of theoretical literature and focused case studies that reveal the multiplicity of ways that the body has been conceived and visualized around the world.  In addition to participation in discussions and presentations, students will develop an original work of art and an accompanying expository essay that, together, respond to the question, "What is the body?"  These works and excepts from students' essays will be curated as a group exhibition in the Panoramic Gallery of the William King Museum of Art (Abingdon, VA) in summer 2023.
